Setting rules should first and foremost include keeping the goal of learning in mind: what is the purpose of the rule and subsequent consequences of breaking the rule. Secondarily, the rule setter should keep in mind the child's normal behavior based upon an understanding of the individual child’s needs and stage of development. The rule and consequences should be kept consistent and reasonable and should include a more positive upkeeping- instead of saying "No, don't do that." instead teach "We SHOULD do this to gain this." Lastly, rules and consequences should be kept safe and never using frightening, hazardous, unusual or humiliating discipline. These include but are not limited to, verbal abuse, any physical abuse, withholding food or liquids
