I think if I ran into something I wasn't familiar with, I might start by asking another teacher with more experience than me or a forum of teachers if I can't find anyone that had a similar situation. After getting some additional information, I may approach the family and admit that I am not clear about a value or a practice and that I have questions I would like ask them to help me understand the situation. And I would also mention that I did some research on my own but I just wanted to make sure I understood it correctly. The most important thing would be to assure them that I want to understand so that I can try and help their child understand too, if they have questions about it when they're not around.
