Families are the first exposure a child has at learning and understanding the world around them. Children may be at a day care for 8-10 hours a day for 5 days a week, but outside of that time they are with their families and they will pick up on a lot of cues from the families on their values or their ideas on how the world works.

Families are the primary caregiver's and we have to learn from them their cultural background so we can incorporate their ways into our teachings of diversity.

The family is the unit where the child lives, learns and is cared for by their parents. There are cultural, religious and other aspects that are in each family and a school is meant to be a place to accept a variety of backgrounds. Families are also the place where a child grows up with parental/provider support. Whereas a childcare center is meant to accommodate and incorporate diversity, one family may not have that sort of background. This is just one example of a way in which a family is the primary caregiver.
