Toys that are safe for the age group. Not too small that can be a chocking hazard for a yound child. Interesting material that can be used in multiple ways for an older child. Will it keep the child busy and engaged?

I think most materials and equipment gives you a guide for what age group it is appropriate for. the more familiar you are with an age group you can quickly identify if something would be safe and engaging. It is important to have a wide variety of materials so kids have options. then they can choose what engages them personally.

toys that are developmentally appropriate and safe for that specific age group. Toys and stations that are interesting, challenging yet achievable for the child.

To determine whether or not a material is appropriate there are a number of factors to consider. One must take into consideration the range of developmental stages in the classroom. Items in the classroom should have items for the youngest developmental stage and for the oldest developmental stage for the age group in question. It is also important to have variety so that children do not become disinterested. Additionally, you should observe how the children materials react to the materials. Mostly keep notes on items that might be developmentally inappropriate for the age group.
