Checklist, running record, tally event, photos and videos can be used to learn about a child's development. Checklist- have a list of things a child should or can be doing and checklist as you observe them do. Running record- Have a system where you can submit any observation.

You can use a Tally Event which is used throughout the day or with one child. This is better for documenting information. You can use a photo or video to see the actual learning skills and reactions. These are handy to look back at and compare the ease or difficulty they had. You can use a running record that will show everything that happens during the same period of time.Or, you can you a checklist to keep track of when a child reaches the next milestone.Again good for documenting more detailed information for files.

You can use a tally system, have a list of milestones to be met, you can write an ongoing log, you can video or take pictures. you need a plan for recording your observations.

Having a running record is a beneficial tool in order to document and observe a child's individual development. Any sort of documentation needs to be planned accordingly. Otherwise, it won't be an effective way of keeping track of development milestones or red flags.
