Although they may not be able to tell time yet, children will pick up on when certain things happen and how long they might have to wait for other things. Having a set schedule is important because children will measure time based on their activities. Although it is good to be somewhat flexible to allow children to work on activities on their own pace, they will figure out that certain activities happen in an order like 1st breakfast, then free play when you are done eating, then wash hands for snack and small group activities.

I do think a schedule or routine is very necessary and helpful. It helps the caregiver have a plan and know how and when things will get done. I think that even the younger children catch on to the schedule and find comfort and security in having one.

Children thrive in an environment that is consistent and they come to know the routine and what is going to happen next. This make transition periods easier and reduces the amount of stress on a child when they know what to expect.

The schedule for children is essential because although they are not able to read clocks at this age, they do understand routines. The routines help to guide the children in their day and helps to feel more at ease once they are established in the routine. They will feel more safe and more secure.
