We do this any time we have children from a different culture. We try to learn a few simple words in their home language such as hello, good bye, etc. We ask that the parents come in (pre covid) and talk to the children. This helps them get a very good understanding of their culture and where they are from. They also share a food experience with the class. I have asked a few parents what we can do to better serve them and how we can celebrate them as well. We have made a no holiday policy so we don't upset any one culture. Parents love to share how to say words, write them and help us pronounce them. One of our parents brought in food each month which was incredible and the children learned so much about India. Right now we have a parent from Egypt that when covid is lifted we are inviting in to talk about Egypt, the foods, words, what kids do for fun etc. Until that happens we are leaning how to say hello. Having family boards with there each child is from was another idea. We have had a multicultural fair before where the parents bring in items and tell about them. I believe this builds a strong relationship with the classroom and everyone feels special.
