Some things I have seen that caused a child to feel disconnected were: their parents' divorce, an only child's first day at care/school, being sick, feeling scared after being in a minor car accident (not injured), feeling left out when their friend plays with someone else at recess, etc.

Children are disconnected due to several factors: frustration, anger, sadness, impotence; also when they perceive rejection, they do not feel empathy with an adult and react negatively to this situation.

I've seen children feel disconnected by things as large as their parents' divorce or passing, and as small as another child's alienation of that child, or by a teacher.
