Most children's settings do not provide opportunities for children to participate in the recommended 60 minutes of structured and 60 minutes of unstructured physically active play. Why is this?
Most children in daycare and preschool are not given the opportunity to get enough physical activity, and children need daily physical activity because it promotes health, development and well-being. Physical activity for children occurs in the form of play, it promotes physical and mental health. There are several reasons most children's settings do not provide opportunities for children to participate in the recommended 60 minutes of structured and 60 minutes of unstructured physically active play, one is because there needs to be improvements made in teacher/caregiver training in incorporating opportunities for structured and unstructured physically activity for children throughout the day. Also, there might be time demands, curricular demands and regulations that might not create an opportunity to provide physical activity for children. Then there might be some preschool settings that do not offer safe spaces or the kind of developmentally appropriate equipment that encourages the opportunity to provide physically activity for children.
