A safe indoor environment includes age-appropriate furniture made from safe materials (ex: no sharp edges), earthquake-proof shelving and cabinets that are anchored to the wall, and appropriate barriers in doorways, such as gates for toddler classrooms.

A safe indoor or outdoor environment is monitored by staff visually and audibly nearby. Indoors there must be no sharp objects, no dangerous chemicals within reach, anchored and stable furniture, and nothing on which to trip. Outdoors require stable fencing, sufficient lighting, and safe play equipment.
